Program Structure

The project duration: 01.02.2010-01.01.2014

A Management Committee (MC) has been appointed on the kick-off meeting in October 2009. The MC is responsible for the overall strategy of the Action and the allocation of funds; it instigates the organization of Action meetings and workshops as well as the compilation of Action reports. The MC involves two persons from each participating country of the Action, the chairs of the Working Groups and the web coordinator. The MC will take responsibility for organizing the midterm and final conference.

Working Groups (WG): FLOODFREQ has five working groups A working group consists of a Working Group Chair (assisted by a vice-Chair) and members of the Action with a special interest in the particular working group topic. The WG Chairs have been elected on the kick-off meeting in October 2009.  The WG Chairs who are responsible for: coordinating and managing the activities within the Action, represent the WG at progress meetings, coordinate and Chair WG meetings, and generally ensure timely delivery of highest quality. The WG Chairs produce six-monthly progress reports to the MC as indicated in the time table. The MC will review progress in all WGs and prioritise activities and recommend actions to deal effectively with obstacles and ensure progress.

Three Workshops (including a Mid-Term Conference and a final Conference) will be organised allowing for all WGs to assess progress and to share and discuss results. At the end of the third year a Mid-Term Conference will be organised, which will be an important Milestone to assess progress and define the required activities to ensure the Action achieves the objectives. The outcome of the Action will be presented at a Final Conference. International experts will be invited to the workshops and conferences and give solicited presentations on selected topics to trigger the scientific discussions; both within and between the different WGs.

FloodFreq is relying on the involvement of geographically dispersed participants. Therefore, to ensure effective communication, co-ordination and dissemination, a dedicated and interactive website is hosted and maintained through-out the duration of the Action by a dedicated project partner. The web-site includes a wiki page, allowing project participants to interact routinely through-out the Action.

FLOODFREQ Working Groups:

WG-1: Inventory of data and methods and compilation of benchmark datasets

WG-2: Assessment of statistical methods for flood frequency estimation

WG-3: Use of rainfall-runoff models for flood frequency estimation

WG-4: Impact of environmental change on flood frequency estimates

WG-5: Dissemination of results

WGs 2, 3 and 4 will undertake the bulk of the scientific work, and the results from the research undertaken will provide the scientific basis for the guidelines to be drawn up in the next, and final, phase. The state-of-the-art methods will be developed, implemented and applied to national data sets and tested through each of the WGs

Stipulation of cross-collaboration both within and between the different WGs is important and addressed through the use of the COST instruments Short-Term Missions and joint WG meetings. Cross-collaboration will be initiated as early as possible during the Action to ensure effective knowledge sharing between the scientific experts.
